RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
